ETHEREAL Lab, University of Calgary
An immersive research lab focused on nonspeaking users, preparing independent studies on Juliet under university ethics oversight.
Every session on AvaKay is both training and research.
For many nonspeakers with apraxia, motor planning, the step between intending a movement and making it, is a central challenge. It looks different in every person and is intertwined with how communication and cognition develop. In XR, the letterboard never moves, so AvaKay can record each learner’s movements in detail, including trajectory, velocity, hesitation and correction. Session by session, this builds a longitudinal map of how each person plans and refines movement over time.
The Motor Signature™ will give researchers something new: an objective record of movement and motor planning in a population that has rarely been studied. Each training task pairs a known target with the movement that followed — the kind of labeled data motor-decoding research relies on. Research partners will be able to study it within the platform, with consent and community oversight built in.
Juliet is AvaKay's wholly owned training environment, purpose-built for nonspeakers. It runs on Foretell Reality, a patented multi-user immersive platform developed by our co-founders and serving patients and students since 2018. In 2025, Foretell was selected for an NIH STTR award in collaboration with Yale, Drexel, and NJIT.
